Explore Chapala’s Old Railway Station: A Local Historic Treasure

If you live in Chapala, you’ve probably heard of the Old Railway Station, a landmark that holds a special place in the town’s history. Built in 1917 and designed by architect Guillermo de Alba, the station was inaugurated in 1920 with the purpose of connecting Guadalajara to Lake Chapala, facilitating both passenger and cargo transportation.
Although its operation as a railway station was short-lived—shutting down in 1926 due to flooding—the building has remained an enduring symbol of the region’s development. Today, it has been restored and transformed into the González Gallo Cultural Center, a vibrant space that hosts exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events that enrich the local community.
With its stunning eclectic architecture featuring French influences, beautifully maintained gardens, and nostalgic atmosphere, the Old Railway Station is a perfect spot for a relaxing walk or an afternoon of cultural exploration. It’s an ideal destination for history and art lovers who want to experience Chapala’s heritage without leaving town.
